SUSTAINABILITY

Spirit of Japan Travel specializes in community-based ecotourism and cultural heritage tourism. According to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), the definition of ecotourism is gresponsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of the local people." We believe in this style of tourism to be socially, culturally, and environmentally responsible and ensure mutual benefits for both that visit and are visited.

Carbon offsetting:
We are a carbon neutral company since day one. All the carbon emission associated with energy required to operate our office, transportation provided for travelers and guides, and accommodations is calculated and offset by investing a portion of our profit into environmental non-profit organizations and renewable energy devices.

Tree planting :
Vast majority of secondary forests of cypresses and cedars in Japan is now unattended due to influx of cheap import lumbers. If branches are not cut as they grow, these coniferous trees block the sunlight, inhibiting others to grow down below. In result, top soil is washed away and eroded, leaving extremely fragile slopes of unhealthy woods. To maintain healthy woods and increase biodiversity, we plant trees with local community and on request basis with travelers under supervision of forestry service.

Sea turtle conservation :
Sea turtles and their spawning grounds in Ohama beach are recognized as a national natural treasure. We work with Sea Turtle Museum to maintain healthy environment for the turtles to come ashore and nest.
